A good dog dies of rare 'swamp cancer'

Lola, maybe the sweetest, certainly the smartest dog I’ve ever owned, died this month of pythiosis, also known as water mold infection or “swamp cancer.”
It’s a deadly fungal infection caused by a parasite, Pythium insidiosum, found in tropical and subtropical waters. She likely got it accompanying me into the Atchafalaya Basin.

Calvin “Boo-Boo” Borel, a three-time Kentucky Derby winner and Catahoula native, has ridden his last race.
His agent, Larry Melancon, told the racing press that Borel informed him of his decision to retire in a phone call on Tuesday, March 29.

Cajun Classique wooden boat cruise postponed until April 25-May 1

The 3rd annual Cajun Classique, a week-long wooden boat cruise on Bayou Teche, will start April 4 in Berwick and end in Leonville on April 10, a leisurely cruise of about 125 miles.

LEONVILLE START – Top of the Teche, a 7.7-mile benefit race for the Leonville Fire Department and Arnaudville Chamber of Commerce, features some of the best current and prettiest scenery you will find on Bayou Teche. Finish is at Myran’s Maison de Manger in Arnaudville. This year’s race is Saturday, April 2. (Ken Grissom)

The competition is for trophies and certificates. Entry of $30 per paddler includes a T-shirt and lunch at Myran’s Maison de Manger in Arnaudville.
