Breaux Bridge in easy 28-15 win over Westgate

The Breaux Bridge Tigers roared to a 28-0 lead over Westgate in three quarters before settling for a 28-15 win over the New Iberia Tigers last Friday

The Breaux Bridge Tigers roared to a 28-0 lead over Westgate in three quarters before settling for a 28-15 win over the New Iberia Tigers last Friday. It was the first District 5-4A game for both teams, leaving The Bridge with a 2-2, 1-0 worksheet while Westgate stands at 2-2, 0-1. Breaux Bridge struck for two first quarter touchdowns and added two more scores in the third stanza before Westgate could manage a pair of face-saving TDs of its own late in the game. Junior running back Marquis Demonter led the Tigers with 114 yards and a TD while Edward Batiste, another junior, rushed for 56 yards and his own score. Senior QB Lane Landry connected on 4-of-11 passes for 60 yards, including a 43-yard strike to Javin Derouselle. The Bridge got its fourth touchdown when junior linebacker Orel Ledet scooped up a Westgate fumble and returned it 51 yards midway through the third period. Breaux Bridge scored on its first possession, marching 80 yards in 8 plays. Demonter got things rolling with a 12-yard pickup and finished the drive with a 34-yard TD run. Michael Vincent added the first of his four PAT kicks. Breaux Bridge took advantage of a Westgate fumble at the WHS 34 to strike for a second score. Batiste accounted for 23 yards on the drive, including the 6-yard touchdown. The Tigers threatened again in the second stanza after defensive back Joseph Williams returned a Westgate fumble 43 yards to the WHS 23. But four plays produced only 3 yards and BB turned it over on downs. The third quarter settled into a defensive battle until Landry found Derouselle open for a 43-yard TD strike at the 7:04 mark. Less than a minute later the Tigers struck again when Ledet got his fumble return TD to boost BB into a 28-0 lead. Westgate’s first TD came with 5:35 left in the game when QB Aaron Bird connected with Arthur Trahan for a 51-yard bomb. Bird added the 2-point conversion with another pass. The New Iberia team got its final score after BB’s Javeyan Williams lost the ball near midfield. Working against Tiger reserves, Westgate went 49 yards in five plays, with the TD coming on an 8-yard Bird-to-Byrick Broussard pass with 2:38 remaining. The PAT kick made the final score 28-15. Breaux Bridge renews it series with rival Teurlings Catholic Friday in Lafayette in another key district battle.
