A special meeting of the St. Martinville City Council has been called for 5 p.m. today (Friday, May 23) to name an interim police chief.
Chief of Police Paula Smith, a political lightning rod in recent years, is retiring effective Friday, May 23, said City Councilman Arthur Champ.

Louisiana State Police detectives have turned their investigation into the Dec. 29, 2013, shooting death of a 34-year-old man by his deputy sheriff wife to the district attorney’s office.
Swarms of volunteers and swarms of mosquitoes competed for the health and well-being of Heather Gary, her 4-year-old son Landon Sonnier, and a friend’s daughter Taylin Toucheck, also 4.

The trio were reported missing Sunday afternoon. Reports that they were seen walking east along Joel Blanchard Rd. in Grand Bois (near Parks) spread rapidly through the community.
An aerial search is being conducted for a woman and two small children last seen in St. Martin Parish Sunday afternoon.
Earlier today, search dogs from Hunt Correctional Center were called in.
The St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office arrested a 25-year-old St. Martinville man after he admitted to having inappropriate sexual conduct with a juvenile.
The Breaux Bridge Area Chamber of Commerce will sponsor a forum featuring the candidates for mayor Thursday, May 22, starting at 6 p.m.
