Calder Hebert tapped to be St. Martinville chief of police

A special meeting of the St. Martinville City Council has been called for 5 p.m. today (Friday, May 23) to name an interim police chief.
The unofficial word is that it's Calder Hebert, a retired U.S. marshal who has served as planning and zoning coordinator for St. Martin Parish Government and also oversaw special projects for the parish, not the least of which was the renovation of the historic courthouse.
Hebert will be replacing Paula Smith who has either retired or resigned.
Smith has not spoken publicly on the matter.
She had been police chief for 10 years, and was an SMPD juvenile officer before that.
The City Council earlier this month voted to suspend Smith without pay for two days for failing to provide council members with periodic written reports. The council also instructed Mayor Thomas Nelson to issue the chief a written reprimand over her handling of an incident at a local lounge. And they demanded a written report from Smith about SMPD’s handling of an incident involving a pit bull in the Durand Subdivision.
Smith had been a political lightning rod in recent years over citizens' dissatisfaction with the police department.
