Canoe, kayak instructor course available March 22-23

Tave Lamperez, a United States Canoe Association instructor trainer, will be giving a course for USCA canoe and kayaking instructor at City Park here Saturday and Sunday.

The cost is $100, which includes USCA membership. Tave is volunteering his time as a friend of Tour du Teche.

ST. LANDRY PARISH – Top of the Teche, from Leonville to Arnaudville, features some of the wildest scenery and some of the swiftest current you’ll find on Bayou Teche. The 7.5-mile race is April 5 this year.

Registration is open for Top of the Teche, a 7.5-mile race for kayaks, canoes and pirogues from Leonville to Arnaudville Saturday, April 5.

The competition is for trophies and certificates, with divisions for men, women and youths 10 to 17 years old. Entry is $40 per paddler.

With a .410 – Gavin Girouard, 7, of St. Martinville, went hunting with Jason Girouard, his uncle, and killed 13 poule d’eau.

This was Gavin’s second hunt of his life.

He made the St. Martin Ducks Unlimited profile picture on the web and the local DU chapter’s Hunter of the Month.

The state marks 30 primitive campsites around the Basin

The state Department of Natural Resources’ Atchafalaya Basin Program (ABP) has designated 30 primitive camping sites on state-owned property in the Atchafalaya Basin for use by the public.

Nearly half of the sites, 14, are in St. Martin Parish. Iberville has 10 and St. Mary six.

Arnaudville – Top of the Teche, the first event in the 2014 Tour du Teche season, is set for Saturday, April 5.

It’s a 7.5-mile race for kayaks, canoes and pirogues from Leonville to Arnaudville in St. Landry Parish.
