A corrections officer for the St. Martin Sheriff’s Office finds himself in jail, accused of smuggling marijuana into the cells.
An investigation into the presence of contraband inside the parish jail resulted in the arrest of Marshall Babineaux Jr., 22, of Breaux Bridge on Tuesday, June 3.
Parish officials are girding themselves for a legal battle with an oilfield-waste disposal company and possibly the state’s Office of Conservation over a stretch of Atchafalaya Basin levee in lower St. Martin.
