Residents of the Atchafalaya Basin were breathing a collective sigh of relief on Monday. According to the latest information, the Morganza Spillway will not have to open for the current high-water event in the Mississippi River.
As part of its ongoing desegregation battle and effort to keep Catahoula Elementary School open, the St. Martin School Board last week agreed to a demand by attorneys with the NAACP to modify the attendance zone governing students attending Parks Primary and Middle schools.
On Monday, Jan. 11, at 6 p.m., officials from St. Martin Parish Government and the parish Office Of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness will host a public meeting in the gym at the Stephensville Elementary School, 3243 Hwy 70., to discuss the potential flood event.
Due to the possibility of flooding in some areas of St. Martin Parish, sandbagging operations will begin on Saturday, January 9, 2016, at the following locations:
Stephensville-The Park
3257 Hwy. 70 at the Park
The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) will conduct a public meeting Thursday, Jan. 21, to discuss a new highway that would serve as an La. 31 bypass around St. Martinville.
The meeting will be held 5-7 p.m. in the recreation center in the city’s Magnolia Park.
