Early voting for the Saturday, April 9, election, which began last Saturday, March 26, continues through this Saturday, April 2.
A Festival of Mercy honoring Mother Teresa, the Saint of Mercy, will be held on the banks of Bayou Teche in St. Martinville on Divine Mercy Sunday, April 3, 9 a.m.-9 p.m.
Once again this year, Sheriff Ronald J. Theriot will be awarding three $1000 college scholarships.
The scholarships will be awarded to one senior each at Breaux Bridge High School, St. Martinville Senior High, and Cecilia High.
The St. Martin Parish Courthouse Annex under construction in 2009. Parish Government rededicated a 4.5-mill property tax originally levied for library construction to finance the annex and renovate the main courthouse, built before the Civil War. Parish Council is now considering asking voters to rededicate revenue from the tax for drainage improvement and to refurbish parks.
Faced with a choice of giving a tax break or renovating and expanding the antebellum parish courthouse, voters back in 2005 chose the latter.
While prospects appear dim that Interstate 49 will detour around Lafayette on the Teche Ridge, St. Martin Parish President Guy Cormier says there is still hope for a major new highway in the parish on that naturally elevated route.
