I sympathize with the St. Martinville officials who are questioning having a Mardi Gras parade in their town. There is none in Belle River nor in neighboring Pierre Part, but there is a Christmas parade which is almost the same thing except for the colors.

Pretend for a moment that your children and all the people you love the most are in London, England, and you are in America. You heard on the news that an incurable plague was sweeping across London, killing the entire population.

On Jan. 19, 1870, the (Franklin) Planters’ Banner reported, “They lately had an earthquake in St. Landry, and it extended to Alexandria. Houses trembled, lamps shook on the table so that they nearly upset, families were alarmed, and it produced a decided sensation. It was a genuine, outspoken earthquake; no shoddy about it.
