Fire, panic, and death

An explosion in an oil stove got the blame for the fire that destroyed G.J. Deville’s dance hall and killed 28 people in Ville Platte in the early evening of Saturday, Nov. 22, 1919. But some people said simple panic had a lot to do with the deaths also.

I emptied the rain gauge on my front porch twice on Sunday, Oct. 25, and that meant nearly 10 inches of rain. It poured down, sheets of rain, pounding rain, blinding rain, a veritable tropical storm of rain. Thank goodness the ground was so dry from the weeks of drought that the excess water drained quickly.
