Spartans blast past Bulldogs

The Comeaux Spartans used a fumble recovery, two passes and a run to strike for four second quarter touchdowns on their way to a 46-20 victory over Cecilia in last week’s season opening football game.
The Bulldogs struck first, going 90 yards on their first possession to take an early 7-0 lead. QB Corey Williams connected with Daniel Angelle for the 50-yard touchdown late in the opening period and Tanner Olivier’s PAT kick put Cecilia up 7-0 going into the second stanza.
But Comeaux got rolling when Brett Dotson found Tanarious Achan open for a 54-yard strike to knot the score. Less than 30 seconds later the Bulldogs fumbled at their own 7 and Spartan Blaine Spell took the ball in for a touchdown to go up 14-7.
The gritty ’Dogs bounced right back with Williams hitting wide receiver Kaleb Carter for a 41-yard TD.
But the Spartans were relentless and tallied two more TDs before intermission, reaching pay dirt on a short pass from Dotson to Jalen Johnson and a 16-yard run by Gabe Ardoin in the final minute of the half to take a 27-14 lead.
The Bulldogs managed to trim the margin to 27-21 early in the third period when Williams chucked his third TD pass, connecting with Angelle for the second time for a 38-yard score.
But Comeaux answered with three touchdowns late in the period to put the game out of reach.
While Spartan quarterback Dotson finished with four TD tosses and 205 yards, Cecilia’s Corey Williams completed more passes (14 to Dotson’s 12) for slightly more yardage (237 to 205).
Williams also accounted for 84 yards rushing for the Bulldogs.
Comeaux had a slight edge in total offense, finishing with 401 yards to Cecilia’s 359, but the Bulldogs turned the ball over three times and were flagged 22 times for 171 penalty yards.
Receivers Angelle and Carter combined for 10 catches, 194 yards and three touchdowns, while Noah Livings added four receptions for 43 yards.
The Bulldogs open their home schedule by hosting the Northside Vikings this Friday.
