Late FG lifts St. M’ville past Northside Vikings

BB falls to Parkview; Carencro tops ’Dogs

The St. Martinville Tigers used a last second field goal to pull out a 17-14 victory over Northside in the opening game of the Lafayette Kiwanis Football Jamboree last week.
The ’Ville was the only parish team to claim a win at the jamboree, as Cecilia fell to Carencro by 20-8 on Thursday and Breaux Bridge lost to Parkview Baptist of Baton Rouge by 20-3 on Friday.
Coach Vincent Derouen’s Tiger got started with a bang when Deantre James raced 55 yards on the first play from scrimmage to put SM in business at the Viking 19. QB Jared Davis hit Dylan Doucet for a 9-yard pickup and two plays later sophomore Tra Benjamin plunged into the end zone less than 3 minutes into the contest.
Northside’s first possession was short-lived when corner back Bryson Demouchet claimed an interception.
Late in the half speedy receiver Deantre James got behind the Viking defense and took a perfectly thrown pass from Davis for a 79-yard score. Dylan Wilmore booted his second PAT to boost SM into a 14-0 halftime lead.
But Northside rallied in the second half, taking the kickoff and using a facemask penalty against the Tigers to earn a first down at the SM 40. A Chance Prejean-to-Mark Bonnet pass was good for 28 yards and then Prejean connected with Morris Dugas for the 17-yard touchdown barely one minute into the second half.
Davis was sacked for a 14-yard loss on The ’Ville’s next possession and a booming Wilmore punt plus a holding penalty pinned the Vikings back at their 11. But two 15-yard penalties against the Tigers along with a 17-yard gain through the air helped move Northside into SM territory. Prejean capped the 89-yard drive with a short flip to Daejuwan Chaney for a 2-yard TD with just 1:23 remaining in the game and the PAT knotted the score at 14-all.
Putting the ball in play with just 1:17 on the clock after the kickoff, Davis threw to James for 8 yards and then Davis picked up 16 yards on a keeper to the Northside 17. But three plays netted zero yards and with just 22 seconds showing Wilmore split the uprights from 34 yards out for the victory.
Benjamin finished with 57 yards on 10 totes while Davis was 4-for-8 through the air for 107 yards.
In addition to his 55-yard run, James caught three passes for 98 yards and a TD.

Carencro 20, CHS 8
The Carencro Bears used a pounding ground attack in rolling to a jamboree win over Cecilia last Thursday.
The Bulldogs fielded a more balanced offense but failed to mount any long drives and found themselves trailing 20- 0 at intermission.
The Bears struck on their first play from scrimmage with Treylon Barnaba racing 70 yards for a score.
Cecilia went 4-and-out on its next possession and the Bears were back on the attack. QB Carl Randall hit Eric Tolivour for a 45-yard pickup to the Bulldog 17. Two plays later Jalen Angelle went one yard for the TD to help boost Carencro to a 13-0 lead with less than 4 minutes off the clock.
The ’Dogs dodged a bullet when their next punt was returned 70 yards for an apparent TD but the score was nullified by a holding penalty.
But the Bears wouldn’t be denied, picking up 38 yards on a run and later moving to the CHS 7 with the help of a personal found penalty against Cecilia. Randall capped the drive on a keeper from the 3 to stretch the lead to 20-0.
Cecilia answered with its best drive of the half but a 4th down pass fell incomplete at the Carencro 31 as the half ended.
The Bulldog defense was able to hold the Bears scoreless through the second half and Cecilia got on the board late when Darius Flenaugh capped a 46-yard drive by scoring from the 2. With a penalty against the Bears moving the ball inside the 2 on the PAT attempt, coach Dennis Skains elected to go for the 2-point conversion and QB Corey Williams hit Dominique Prejean to make the final score 20-8.
Williams was Cecilia’s top rusher with 18 yards on four carries while connecting on 8-of-19 tosses for 71 yards.
His favorite receivers were Daniel Angelle (4 catches, 22 yards) and Noah Livings (2 for 45).

Parkview 20, BBHS 3
Parkview Baptist won the 2015 Division II-Select state championship by defeating St. Thomas More and they lined up against Breaux Bridge loaded with talent last Friday, posting a dominating 20-3 victory.
The Eagles took the opening kickoff and drove 60 yards to take an early lead. But the Tigers made it easy for Parkview, being flagged for back-to-back 15-yard penalties that set the Eagles up with a first down at the BB seven and two plays later Parkview was on the board.
The Eagles got their second score after taking over at the BB 31 when Sa’Barian Alexander fumbled a punt return.
Breaux Bridge took the second half kickoff and advanced to the PB 17 when junior QB Julian Leon found Dartravian Gregory open for a 44-yard pickup. But Leon’s next two throws fell incomplete and the Tigers had to settle for a 32-yard field goal by Bailey Thibodeaux that cut the Parkview lead to 14-3.
But the Eagles put the game away on their ensuring possession, driving 86 yards in eight plays for their third score.
Breaux Bridge fans got excited when Alexander returned the ensuing kickoff 65 yards to the Parkview 27 and a roughing the passer penalty against the Eagles moved the ball to the 14. But Leon’s 4th down pass into the end zone missed the mark in the closing minutes of the game.
The Tigers couldn’t get anything going on the ground and finished with just 57 yards total offense while Leon went 6-for-14 through the air. Dartravian Gregory had the 44-yard catch while Tyrick Davis got 11 yards on 2 catches.
