SMSH hits slump in Dist. 5-4A campaign

The St. Martinville Tigers dropped their second consecutive District 5-4A game last Friday, falling to league-leading St. Thomas More by a close 53-50.

The ’Ville, which stood at 4-1 in district play early in the season, saw their league record dip to 4-3 as the teams enter the homestretch. The Tigers are 12-14 overall.

St. Martinville had dropped its first match up with the Cougars back in January and then lost at home to Cecilia on Jan. 31.

The Tigers did eke out a 58-56 non-district win over Beau Chene on Feb. 4.

St. Martinville was hurt by a slow start and trailed STM 14-4 going into the second quarter. The Tigers managed to close the gap to 18-14 by intermission and outscored their visitors 18-3 in the third stanza. But the Cougars rallied down the stretch, pouring in 32 points while limiting SM to 18.

Tylan Neveu led St. Martinville with 14 points, seven rebounds, three assists and one steal, while Drapper Anthony contributed 13 points, three rebounds and three assists.

Breaux Bridge went 1-1 last week, suffering a 52-36 loss to Northside while taking a 72-66 win over Westgate on Friday. The Bridge stands at 1015, 2-7.

Cecilia also owns a 2-7 district mark and is 9-16 overall after dropping games to Teurlings and Northside last week.

Only three games remain in regular season action for the parish teams and The ’Ville is hoping for a strong finish.

•Tuesday, Feb. 18 – Westgate at St. Martinville; St. Thomas More at Cecilia; Washington-Marion at Breaux Bridge.
