Bulldogs blast past New Iberia

Cecilia used its high powered offense complimented by an opportunistic defense to power its way to a surprisingly easy 44-12 win over the New Iberia Yellow Jackets of District 5-5A last week.
Running back Raymond Calais Jr. turned in his usual productive effort, rushing for 192 yards and a pair of touchdowns while quarterback Landon Roberts tossed three TD passes, finishing with 9 completions on 16 attempts without an interception for 204 yards.
His favorite targets were Kenya Dartez (5 catches, 110 yards, TD) and Rusty Robin (4-for-94, 2 TDs).
The Bulldog defense came up with four interceptions against the pass oriented Jackets. And while NI quarterback Timothy Declouet did throw for 238 yards and two scores, the turnovers and a feeble running game kept the Jackets from making a game of it.
Cecilia jumped into an early lead with Dartez taking a 33-yard pass from Roberts for the game’s first score midway into the first period. Less than a minute later Kendrick Zeno intercepted Declouet to set up Calais’s first TD, an electrifying 85 yard run that helped put the ’Dogs up 14-0.
Cecilia stretched its lead to 21-0 early in the second quarter when Calais capped a 63-yard drive with a 6-yard TD.
New Iberia finally got on the board with an impressive 10-play, 63-yard drive that ended with Declouet hitting Lebronze Allen for the touchdown from 16 yards out.
But Cecilia came storming back, scoring on a 56-yard Roberts-to-Rusty Robin pass and a 30-yard field goal by Tanner Olivier to take a commanding 31-6 halftime lead.
The Bulldogs added two more scores in the second half with Robin catching his second TD pass, this one a 24-yarder from Roberts, and Roberts wrapping things up with a 1-yard sneak that was set up by Zeno’s second pick which he returned 41 yards.
New Iberia scored early in the final stanza on a 6-yard pass from Declouet to Baden Simpson, but it was too little, too late.
Cecilia improved to 7-1 overall with the non-district win and now prepares for its annual showdown with parish rival Breaux Bridge at home this Friday.
The Jackets fell to 3-5 with the loss.
