BBHS, Cecilia renew old rivalry on Friday

Week 9 of this year’s football season features the big showdown between parish rivals Breaux Bridge (5-3, 2-1)and Cecilia (7-1, 2-0). It’s a key game in a close District 5-4A race and provides the winner with bragging rights for another year.
And it’s The Bridge’s final regular season game as the Tigers have an open date in Week 10.
St. Martinville (5-3, 2-0) shares the 5-4A lead with Cecilia and will be celebrating homecoming against winless Westgate on Friday.

Breaux Bridge
Sophomore Logan Bossier stepped up big time for the Tigers in their 27-10 win over Westgate, rushing for 130 yards and a pair of touchdowns on just five carries.
“He’s strong and fast,” says coach Paul Broussard, “and he’s getting better as he gains experience.”
Broussard was also relieved to get running back Ruben Hypolite back into the lineup after the senior missed three games with an injury. “He was a little rusty, but he’s able to go full speed. So that will certainly help our offense.”
Another standout in the Westgate game was senior defensive back Izrael Ledet who had two interceptions and returned a punt 60 yards for a touchdown.
“He’s really been playing well all season,” says Broussard.
The Tiger coach is also hoping defensive back Sabarian Alexander will be off the injured list for this Friday’s big game.
The stingy Tiger defense will have to be at its best in going against the high-powered Bulldog offense which is averaging better than 40 points per outing.
In recent weeks the Bulldog passing game has delivered big time and Broussard points out that’s what really puts pressure on opponents’ defenses.
“Their quarterback (Landon Roberts) has a good arm and he’s also dangerous when he decides to tuck it in and run. And their defense is really playing well now.”
“This is a must win game for us,” Broussard added. “We’ve got to be ready. And hopefully we’ll be at full strength.”

Cecilia
The Bulldog offense turned in its usual eye-turning numbers against New Iberia, with Raymond Calais rushing for 192 yards and a pair of touchdowns and QB Landon Roberts throwing for 204 yards and three scores.
But it was a stingy defense that raised eyebrows as Cecilia limited a New Iberia offense that had been averaging 30 points per game to just two touchdowns, intercepting four passes and shutting down the running attack.
“We bent a bit,” says coach Terry Martin, “but I was surprised at how effective our defense was.”
Kendrick Zeno and Chance Goodie each had two picks which Martin said was a big factor in Cecilia’s success.
Martin also credited the punting of Sonny Angelle which pinned the Jackets deep in their territory on several occasions.
On Monday Martin was awaiting word on the status of outside linebacker Jerry Hayes who suffered a bruised shoulder in last week’s game.
Cecilia hasn’t beaten Breaux Bridge since 2010 (38-21) although the ’Dogs came close last year before falling 20-18.
“It’s certainly a big game,” Martin admits. “But I really feel the two communities are more into it that our players. Our focus this week will be to fix the areas, like excessive penalties, where we have problems.”
Fans are reminded that advance tickets are on sale all week in the CHS office priced at $7.

SM-Westgate
“We were our own worst enemy,” said SM coach Vincent Derouen referring to his team’s shaky performance in its 23-6 win over Abbeville last week.
The Tigers gave up three turnovers, drew nine penalties and failed to score on three different possessions inside the Wildcat 10.
“It’s the little things that hurt us and something we work on every week during practice,” Derouen says, while quickly adding, “but we still got the win.”
The Tiger defense completely shut down the Wildcats who managed only 10 net yards on offense.
“We’ve felt all year that our defense was a strong point for us,” Derouen observed.
The Tigers are still dealing with a flurry of nagging injuries that has forced coaches to juggle assignments.
Senior running back Kain Pitre has been slowed by a sore shoulder and was held out of the Abbeville game. Junior QB Jared Davis was pulled midway through the third quarter to give his gimpy knee a rest and senior defensive end Jean Paul LeBlanc had to play with a soft cast on his right wrist.
Derouen insists that Westgate is a better team than their 0-8 record might suggest.
“They’ve played a tough schedule,” Derouen points out. “We sure can’t afford to take them lightly.”
The Tiger coach and his staff also have to deal with the distractions of homecoming this week and “that’s always a challenge,” says Derouen.
