BB, SM face 5-4A foes; Cecilia returns to NI

As the 2015 football season moves into the home stretch Breaux Bridge and St. Martinville continue their District 5-4A campaigns while Cecilia returns to New Iberia for a non-league contest against the Yellow Jackets of District 3-5A.
The Bridge celebrates homecoming by hosting Westgate on Friday. The ’Ville will be playing its third Thursday night game, this time at Abbeville.

BB-Westgate
Breaux Bridge finally got its offense cranking in its 30-8 win over Abbeville last Friday, piling up 145 rushing yards and 155 through the air.
Coach Paul Broussard says sophomore quarterback Julian Leon “threw real well” in completing 12-of-15 tosses for 155 yards and two touchdowns. And Daniel Lee, one of several backs filling in for the injured Ruben Hypolite, stepped up big time with two receiving touchdowns and one on the ground. “He’s really come through for us,” added Broussard.
While the Tiger defense limited Abbeville to 98 net yards, Broussard was a little disappointed that the unit allowed the Wildcats to stage an 86-yard scoring drive that drained over eight minutes of the clock.
Hypolite should be back in action for this Friday’s game while RB/DB Sabarian Alexander will like be sidelined for at least one more week.
Westgate has yet to win a game this season but Broussard says he sees a team with some very talented athletes who are capable of breaking big plays.
“They’re having trouble putting it all together,” says Broussard. “But they’re still scary.”

Cecilia at New Iberia
The Bulldogs had a pretty easy time of it in securing their sixth win of the season over Westgate last Friday although running back Raymond Calais was held to his lowest production of the season and failed to score. But his 138 rushing yards moved him to the top of the Cecilia career rushing chart. With 5,047 yards Calais eclipsed the old career mark of 4,904 set by Jamaican Dartez way back in 1993.
And he’s still got three more regular season games to go as well as a likely trip into the playoffs.
Also setting a new career CHS record was QB Landon Roberts whose 175 yards against Westgate boosted his total to 3,631, breaking the old record of 3,475 yards set by Brian Champagne in 1983.
Coach Terry Martin was also pleased with the play of the Bulldog defense, which came up with four turnovers, returning a fumble and an interception for scores.
“That’s always a huge momentum builder,” says Martin.
New Iberia owns a 3-4 record but Martin is quick to point out that the Yellow Jackets are used to playing at a high level against quality 5A schools.
“They’re very talented,” emphasizes Martin. “And coach Hutson is one of the best offensive guys around.”
The Jackets have averaged almost 38 points over their last four games that included wins over Lafayette (35-14) and Sam Houston (45-21).
“Defensively, they put a lot of pressure on you,” Martin adds. “We’ve still got a few things to clean up offensively to get ready for the stretch run.”
Martin also announced that the school will offer advance tickets for the Oct. 30 home game against Breaux Bridge. The price will be $7 and early purchasers can avoid long lines on game night.

SM at Abbeville
St. Martinville has had problems with penalties and turnovers all season and it really hurt the Tigers in last week’s loss to Comeaux.
The ’Ville was flagged 15 times, including several damaging third down infractions, and turned the ball over four times, with two fumbles being returned for touchdowns.
“We’re still working to address those problems and looking for answers,” coach Vincent Derouen said Monday.
He also added that his team seemed to be flat after their emotional win against Breaux Bridge the week before.
“Comeaux was very physical,” says Derouen, “and we just took them too lightly.”
QB Jared Davis was sacked eight times. “He was running for his life,” says Derouen. “But he’s a real trooper and he never let up.”
The Tigers will be without the services of senior defensive end Jean Paul LeBlanc who suffered a wrist injury early in last week’s game.
Abbeville brings a 3-4 record to the game after last week’s loss to Breaux Bridge. “They looked bad against Breaux Bridge,” Derouen admits. “But they’re not that bad. Our main worry this week will be how our kids handle themselves.”
Tiger fans are reminded that the game has been moved from Friday to Thursday.
