Park board looks into rules against animal

In the near future it may be illegal to let an animal “do its business” on baseball and soccer fields in Abbeville.

Kelly Mire, who sits on the Abbeville Parks and Recreation Board, would like to see pet owners not allow their animals to run onto fields at A. A. Comeaux Park and leave a mess.

Mire says he has witnessed times when the animal and owner will walk away leaving something behind for someone else to step or fall in.

“We have people who live around the park that take their dogs and let the animal ‘go’ on the field where children play baseball or soccer. That is so disrespectful,” Mire said. “We need rules in place in the park.”

Mire, who lives near the park, has witness such irresponsibility on the part of a dog owner. He confronted the pet owner and the pet owner responded, “I don’t see any rules.”

Mire would like to fix that and recently brought it to the attention of the city council that the parks and recreation board were looking into it.

What he is looking for is the city to place signs near the baseball and soccer field that prohibits animals from using the fields in such a manner or if it does happen to pick it up.

“I don’t want my five year old stepping in it while he’s on the field,” he added.

Another thing the city is looking into is a ban on four-wheelers at the park. Mire said he has witnessed parents unload four-wheelers behind their truck and then let the children ride all over the park.
