Mayfest makes record $$$$

There are a lot of people who are excited about how the 2008 May Festival turned out this past weekend.

Marcie Guidry is one happy person today because she won the drawing for the car at the Vermilion Catholic May Festival.

Guidry, 36, does not own a car and has had to rely on her mother to bring her back and forth to work at Shuck’s. For the last five years, she has worked as the cashier at Shucks.

However, on Sunday, around 3:05 p.m., she received a phone call from someone from the festival telling her she won.

“I did not believe it,” Guidry said. “I was shocked. I had just asked my mom who won the car. The phone rang a minute later. When I answered it, I heard music in the background.”

Guidry got excited after being told she won the car. She was asked to come down to VC to claim her prize. She drove off in the car, donated by Ray Chevrolet, on Tuesday.

While there was a lot of luck involved, Guidry also purchased a lot of tickets from VC students who asked. In all, she thinks she purchased around 80 to 100 tickets. It paid off.

The day she won, she had to call David Bertrand, her boss, to tell him she was going to be late for work because of what she had just won. She said the Bertrand family was excited for her.

Not only was Guidry happy with the May Festival, but so were the people who put on the May Festival.

For the first time in 30 years, the May Festival made over $200,000 before the bills are paid.

According to Catherine Miller of Mt. Carmel, the festival raised $203,188.

“That is the best ever,” Miller said. “It was amazing. It is a combination of a lot of hard work and generous people.”

The money raised will be divided between Mt. Carmel and VC.

The chairperson for this year’s festival was Melanie Waskom.
