Baja St. Martin
The rains have finally ceased, thank goodness. At least temporarily. My yard is still a bit soggy and unfortunately my 4-month-old puppy has found the soft soil perfect for digging holes. Nevertheless, the sun shone this afternoon and it was heavenly. The cooler weather is also pretty nice. Great sleeping weather.
I am having a ductless, mini-split A/C-heating system installed in my house. I’d hoped it would be in functioning mode by today, but some part the company ordered was wrong, so I may have to wait until next week to try the thing out. This kind of cooling/heating system is for houses like mine which have no place for duct work. I don’t have an attic and while there is a good crawl space beneath the house, the latter diminishes considerably when the water is high. I’ve never had water in my house but I also don’t want to worry about duct work getting submerged. So, this system has no ducts and is reputed to be exceptionally quiet, clean, efficient and effective for a small house like mine. I’ll let you know how it works.
I was in Morgan City last week when heavy rains fell and I made the mistake of taking several side streets on the way home, never realizing that the drainage on them wasn’t as good as the more widely traveled roads. At one point, I really feared my car would bog down in water that turned out to be a lot deeper than I’d expected. It was somewhat humbling to find myself in the situation that I have frequently scoffed at – like why are those nutty people driving in water like that? Now, I realize they didn’t know just how bad it was.
I also stopped that day at a pharmacy and while waiting for a prescription the ceiling in the place started leaking around surface lights. The owners hauled out buckets for the worst drips, but I kind of waited for the ceiling to fall in like that commercial on TV where a drip becomes a leak!
November is a relatively quiet month at Stephensville Elementary. Aside from Wednesday snack sales, the biggest event is Thanksgiving vacation from Nov. 23 through Nov. 27.
Bingo will be held in the Belle River center on Nov. 17 with cake provided by Humana. Bingo again on Tuesday, Dec. 1, and again on Dec. l5. On the latter date, there will be bingo, cake and a potluck social. We’re inviting seniors to come and play bingo, of course, but to also bring a dish they can share with others. We thought it would be a nice get-together before Christmas, so I hope you’ll come to one of the events.
The last Food for Seniors was double-box day and I was a bit disappointed that some people had to be reminded to come apparently because it was not on a usual day. That’s what those pink cards are for, folks. Please look at the dates I write on the back!
I hope you are enjoying the debates more than I am. I’ve tried to watch a few so I’ll be a bit more informed, but honestly they’re not all that informative and pretty tedious to boot. They spend an inordinate amount of time bashing one another and not a whole lot saying what they would do if elected.
At least the phone calls are not so frequent. I really got aggravated with politicians calling particularly in the evenings. I guess the Do Not Call program does not apply to them. Sometimes I wonder if it applies to anyone. I’ve updated mine at least three times and still get telemarketer calls late in the evenings.
