Baja St. Martin
Either I was mistaken or told the wrong figure, but I just asked a fisherman what the price of crawfish was and he said $1.85 a pound. I’d thought it had fallen. He said (and I agree) that the price will definitely drop precipitously on the Monday after Easter. That always happens. Some have said it will not be a good season since it’s starting late and Easter is early. I guess we’ll see.
The Belle River landing is packed every day, but other than the one boat I noticed with a load of purple sacks, I’ve not seen much evidence of people catching a lot. I pass the crawfish buying stands almost every day going to and from Pierre Part and while they all seem to be manned, there are no piles of sacks on the stands.
The weather is beautiful, though. Certainly a nice time to be in the woods or anywhere for that matter.
We’ve heard nothing about the FAS/levee situation. Neighbors and I have noticed a big increase in the tanker truck traffic on our road. I don’t know if that’s significant or just coincidental. I was awakened one morning by one of the trucks roaring by at 3 a.m. I hope you read a Letter to the Editor that I sent about a recent National Geographic article I read about how injection wells may be causing earthquakes. I won’t repeat the article here.
By the way, I will call everyone, but take note that I made a mistake on the pink cards the Food for Seniors have. I put the next date for distribution as April 24 and it should be April 23. Sorry about that.
On April 25, Saturday from noon to 1 p.m., a vet will be holding a rabies clinic at the Belle River meeting room on Hwy 70. It will only cost $5 for the shot. This is just for rabies, so if you need more, you’ll have to contact your personal vet. Anyway, noon to 1 p.m. on April 25. Mark your calendars! If you didn’t already get a flyer, there will be some available at the site. Just fill out with owners name, address, phone number, pet’s name, breed, cat, dog, male or female. Or just put all this info on a piece of paper for the vet. Oh, and make sure your pet is leashed or properly contained.
It looks as though Stephensville Elementary will not win first prize in the Courtesy Ford giveaway. It was really amazing that such a tiny school was able to outvote all the others for so long, but St. Martinville High has overcome, not surprisingly. Hopefully, Stephensville will get second prize – a $1000 scholarship, I believe. The contest isn’t quite over, so if you’re voting, keep it up. And thank you all who voted for Stephensville at my urging. I really appreciate your help.
One, maybe two hummingbirds are using my feeder these days. It hangs right outside my windows, and if I don’t notice the little guys, I can hear their buzzing even with the windows closed. The martins are busy nesting as I’ve said. I’m so glad they returned even if it was late.
The St. Martin Parish Council on Aging will have a crawfish boil on April 22 at St. Francis of Assisi Church in Breaux Bridge from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. I think the COA people could use someone to boil the crawfish and of course, donations of the critters are always welcome. And during the week of May 18-22, American Week, the COA will be having daily activities at the Sydney Mae Durand building on Mills Hwy in Breaux Bridge.
Hope you had a wonderful, safe Easter.
