Peabody Warhorses champs of SMSH Holiday Shootout

The Peabody Warhorses of Alexandria raced past four opponents on their way to claiming top honors in the Holiday Shootout basketball tournament hosted by St. Martinville Sr. High this past week.

The perennial powerhouse chalked up wins over Franklin, Westgate and Helen Cox before vanquishing Lafayette High 57-50 in the championship contest on Sunday evening.

Helen Cox of New Orleans earned third place honors with a 63-51 victory over New Iberia.

The tournament proved tough sledding for St. Martin Parish’s three entries. The local schools all lost their opening games and Cecilia made an early exit with a second loss to McDonogh 35. Breaux Bridge managed to edge Jeanerette 47-46 in the losers’ bracket but fell to St. Martinville 39-34 in overtime.

The ’Ville dropped its opener to Lafayette and its second game to Helen Cox. But the Tigers rallied to 49-46 win over McDonogh followed by the exciting victory against The Bridge on Sunday.

Regular season action resumes for parish teams this Friday when St. Martinville (5-7) hosts Jeanerette and Cecilia (5-8) plays Northwest at home.

The District 5-4A campaign opens next Tuesday, Jan. 7, with The ’Ville visiting Cecilia and Breaux Bridge (7-8) on the road against Teurlings Catholic.
