Virginia Yongue gets philanthropic award

Lafayette – Community Foundation of Acadiana (CFA) will honor Virginia Olivier Yongue at its fourth annual Leaders in Philanthropy Awards Luncheon Nov. 14 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Cajundome Convention Center.
Yongue has been chosen to receive the 2014 Leaders in Philanthropy Award for her unwavering commitment to causes throughout St. Martin Parish.
An active member of St. Bernard Church, Yongue has served on the St. Bernard Church Council, the committee to reopen St. Bernard School, and was a lector and Eucharistic minister at the church for more than 40 years. She was also a charter member of Catholic Daughters on the Court of St. Paul. She has been a member of many local organizations, such as the Breaux Bridge City Council, Breaux Bridge Chamber of Commerce, Breaux Bridge Historical Society and the Acadiana Symphony Orchestra. She was a member of the Friends of the Humanities for more than 25 years. She was also a Patron for Scholastique de Pique Breaux Bridge Project Veterans Park in 1998.
Yongue is one of ten individuals who will be recognized for making a positive impact in their communities through philanthropy. Also to be honored are:
•Acadia Parish – Bobby and Mollie Hanks
•Evangeline – Gervis LaFleur
•Iberia – Donald “Doc” Voorhies
•Lafayette – Bob Lowe
•St. Landry – Dr. Joe H. Wilson
St. Mary – Johnny and Mary Lou Conrad
•Vermilion – Mary Ellen Sonnier.
Nominations were submitted by the community and CFA’s board of directors emeriti made final selections.
In addition to the above award recipients, CFA will also present an inaugural corporate award to Stone Energy Corporation for its outstanding philanthropy in Acadiana.
The luncheon will also feature keynote speaker Stephen G. Post, PhD, founding director of the Center for Medical Humanities, Compassionate Care and Bioethics at the Stony Brook University School of Medicine. Dr. Post will share his expertise on the scientific connection between generosity and happiness.
Tickets are $50 each and tables of eight are $400. The deadline to purchase tickets is Nov. 5.
