Top Job open at parish COA

At the June 18 regular monthly meeting of the St. Martin Council on Aging, board members accepted the resignation of Lynette Edwards, who was named COA executive director Feb. 3, 2014. Applications for her replacement are being accepted immediately. Deadline to submit a resume in a sealed envelope is 3 p.m. on July 7, attention Beth Guidroz, COA chairman.
After finding that the bingo sessions held at the Metro Bingo Hall in Lafayette were no longer profitable the board members voted to discontinue the Sunday bingo sessions effective immediately.
Board members also accepted the resignation of District 8 representative William “Bill” LeGrand, due to medical reasons, effective June 30; and District 9 representative Leonard Marks effective June 9. “The responsibilities of the board and committees have proven to be more time consuming than I originally anticipated and are having a negative effect on my personal pursuits,” says Marks in his letter resigning from the board.
Sharon Guidroz Schexnider was named to replace LeGrand effective July 1. COA is also seeking a replacement for Marks, anyone interested call 332-3063.
Shannon Broussard, executive director of the Cajun Area AAA (one of the COA’s funding agencies), attended the meeting and offered to assist and guide board members on what questions to ask applicants for the executive director’s job.
Services provided by the Council on Aging will continue uninterrupted, including light housekeeping, which consist of one-hour session of cleaning the area where the senior spends the majority of their time, and Outreach, a service offered to seniors who are in need of someone to stop by for a short visit.
The Meals on Wheels program provides daily meals delivered to the seniors in their homes. Meals are also served during lunch Monday - Friday, at the Sydnie Mae Durand Activity Center in Breaux Bridge and at Magnolia Park in St. Martinville.
These services are available through the COA to anyone over the age of 60 who is a resident of St. Martin Parish. Seniors can apply by calling 332-3063 during regular business hours, Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. - 3 p.m.
In other business:
•Council on Aging received a $1,000 grant from Walmart Giving which will be used for the meals program.
•Council on Aging is accepting bids to wash and clean transportation vans.
•Fans donated by CLECO are available to seniors in need on a first come, first served basis.
•Anyone interested in volunteering with the Council of Aging call 332-3063.
