Library's Breaux Bridge branch open for learning

In a well-attended ribbon cutting ceremony Friday, May 8, the new Breaux Bridge Public Branch Library opened its doors at its historic location in downtown Breaux Bridge.
Designed by Breaux Bridge architect Glenn Angelle with input from Dallas-based architect Denelle Wrightson, the building reflects the best modern practices in library architecture. Wrightson is a specialist in library interior design.
The location at 102 Courthouse St. makes the new facility an integral part of downtown and is an easy walk from schools.
Many years of planning and effort have paid off with a library that was worth the wait and was built without debt financing. The library board of St. Martin Parish secured the funds over a period of 15 years before construction began.
Considerable space is devoted to the children’s area. Interesting architectural features like a kid-sized doorway between rooms and other interesting decor make the area inviting. Quiet reading areas and electronic media complement the extensive collection of children’s books and videos.
Not just for kids, of course, the new building includes comfortable spaces for reading and group activities, a conference room and multi-use spaces that promise to make the library part of Breaux Bridge civic life for generations to come.
The 12,558 square-foot facility cost $3,059,900 and features shelf capacity for 33,500 items, a total of 18 computers, including four each for teens and younger children, five study tables for adults, four for teens and three for children.
