MAYOR-ELECT Ricky Calais responds to congratulations from supports upon hearing final results in Saturday’s runoff election.

How the Breaux Bridge election went down

Ken Grissom

As expected, the mayoral runoff here Saturday pitted neighborhood against neighborhood with the decision hanging on turnout.
Ricky Calais, a former Breaux Bridge City Council member, won a narrow victory with 51 percent, 1,493 votes. His opponent, St. Martin Parish Council member Jill Hebert, at 1,423 votes, came in just 70 votes behind.
Citywide, it was an even tighter race between incumbent U.S. Sen. Mary Landrieu and U.S. Rep. Bill Cassidy, who received only 33 votes more than Landrieu – 1,256 to 1,223, 50.6 percent to 49.3 percent.
Both Landrieu and Hebert counted heavily on a strong turnout of African-American voters.
Of course Cassidy’s victory was far more decisive statewide, where it counts. He won by 56 percent.
Another race on Saturday’s ballot in some precincts was for the 16th Judicial District Division G judgeship. Curtis Sigur beat Lucretia Pecantte 55-45 percent.
