Books Along the Teche hosting sugarcane book signing Saturday
A new picture book covering every phase of the Louisiana sugarcane industry has been published, and the photographer/author will be at Books Along The Teche in New Iberia to sign copies on Saturday.
The signing – by sugarcane industry safety consultant Ronnie Olivier – begins at 10:30 a.m. and goes until 12:30 p.m.
Louisiana Sugarcane Pictorial is a 112-page, 11x8 ½ hardcover book with 130-plus photographs. It provides a step by step account – illustrated with pictures – explaining how sugarcane is harvested, processed and refined into the sugar found on the tables of American consumers today.
Also featured are aerial photos of all 11 mills operating in south Louisiana, as well as rare pictures of old machinery and mills that served the industry in a bygone era.
The book includes an abundance of pictures that provide a rare behind-the-scenes look at the inner workings of a sugar mill – images seldom seen by anyone other than those who work in the mills.
