Until the late 1930s, when the Great Depression and Huey Long’s road-paving program did away with them, little trains scooted all across south Louisiana carrying both passengers and freight.
Weather gurus use a long list of sophisticated equipment, including high-powered computers that model all of the possibilities as fronts push this way and that, pockets of high or low pressure skip hither and yon, and jet streams meander through the atmosphere.
My purple martins have all left but the two bird houses on the dock are still occupied by those little brown birds. Wrens? Sparrows? They co-habited with the martins all season but apparently they prefer to make it their permanent home. I will take the houses down as always in the summer to make sure storms don’t smash them.
