Jayvee Music Reviews with Jeff Vallet

Beck – Morning Phase

It is going to be a very good year for Beck. His latest record, Morning Phase, has all the components to be his best yet.

Oh, he has had some memorable albums. And I must say that all of his albums so far are top notch. This one is along the lines of his 2002 release, Sea Change. By the way, Sea Change was a great record.

Beck gives us a glimpse of what is in store from the get go. I especially liked “Cycle” and “Morning.” I did pick up on a theme that seems to permeate the new record. I think that Morning Phase is an answer to what if the world continues to go on its current path.

As usual, the master singer-songwriter delivers an album that the music world can sink their teeth into.

After my first listen to the release, I realized that this was one of those albums that is just a commercial release. When Beck puts an album out, then you can be assured that it is worth your money and time to listen to.
I liked the story that was told in the tune “Country Down.” It involves a man and a lifeboat.

There are a couple aching, hurting songs. One of which is “Waking Light.” Beck’s life hasn’t been without complications and problems. After suffering a back injury, Beck couldn’t even hold his guitar for a number of years. It kind of makes me wonder if the universal problems he sings about also could include his personal issues as well.

There are plenty albums being released this time of year. I think that this one will be around when the awards will be given out later this year.

Beck, you have my attention!
