Butte La Rose et Les Entourage

Bonjour!

One of a mother’s worst worries is that something would happen to her child, no matter what their ages, living away from home. My son, Steven Segura, suffered congestive heart failure New Year’s Eve. He lives in Delhi, a small town in the northeast corner of Louisiana.

Steve had a triple heart bypass two years ago in Monroe. His doctors are close by to where he lives. Something happened to him that afternoon causing him to lose his breath, making him fall to the floor. He was not down long before someone walked in and found him and called an ambulance, which arrived within minutes. They did CPR but by then he’d lost oxygen to his heart and brain.

He was brought to the hospital in his town and there an RN worked on him for about 15 minutes to revive his heart. In the meantime the Rapides Regional Medical Center in Alexandria was contacted for his transfer within an hour. He was too ill to travel by ambulance. That hospital is equipped to handle any condition such as his. The helicopter trip took about 45 minutes. He was immediately stabilized upon arrival.

His daughter, Maria Shiver, living in Florida panicked upon receiving the call about her dad. She called my daughter Blanche and me and asked us to call our family.

We also went on Facebook and asked our friends to send prayers for my son. Hundreds responded!

It was horrible hearing Steven suffered a heart attack. When we arrived in Alec, within minutes after Steven, the doctor told us not to expect him to make it through the night. But he did. He was in a coma then and still remains so.

The next day, Wednesday, we were told to expect he could have another heart attack within 48 hours. It did not happen. And on Friday, doctor met with us and told us our Steven has a surprisingly strong heart.

A few days later after the neurologist read his X-rays and we are told he has a blood clot on his brain and one in his left arm. Their plans are to dissolve them but there is always a chance a piece of the clot could break loose and travel to other parts of his body. This is a crucial time. We were also told if he would not open his eyes by Sunday, Jan. 5, he would live as a vegetable.

Today is Monday, Jan. 13, and after many ups and downs Steve is still with us – but also still in a not-so-severe coma. He is somewhat answering us when he is wake. The doctor’s progress report’s are encouraging and is saying about possible therapy in the future and him walking again.

But he has come a long way with God’s healing hands through prayer by the many family and Facebook friends.

Giving credit to God above all! And the entire staff at the Rapides Regional Medical Center and all the prayers sent our way. Even when it seemed there may not have been any hope on his pulling through, the doctors and nurses here at this hospital gave Steven the best of care that could have been given to anyone.

God willing I will be back next week. God bless all!
