Baja St. Martin

I was a little disappointed by the number of people who came to the Cat and Dog Rabies Clinic on April 23, but very happy Dr. Delhomme and her helpers did come and provide that service. I think 18 people came with their dogs and cats, about half the number of the first year clinic.
I was a bit afraid ahead of time that the attendance might be low for our clinic because that day, Saturday the 23rd, was the same day the Pierre Part Store held its 105 Anniversary celebration, and the Pierre Part Middle School Beta Club held a huge rummage sale in the school gym to raise money for their next competition, and there was a funeral and the St. Joseph church was packed with mourners. So a lot of people were busy with other activities.
Next year, I will do a better job of promoting the clinic also because it’s a great thing. Several of the pet owners who did come said how much they appreciated this clinic. Where else can you get a rabies injection for $5!
Still, the weather was gorgeous and we set up tables on the Belle River Community Center porch for the vet’s helpers. Dr. Delhomme was fast and efficient as always. One or two dogs managed to get loose from their owners and had to be corralled on the walking trail. The doc took the two cats inside for their injections just in case they got free. One dog scratched its owner. Nobody got bitten. It was fun and I look forward to the clinic next year.
The weather is absolutely gorgeous here, but it is getting a little warm. I hate closing up my house but today I turned on the A/C for the first time this year. Having the doors and windows closed makes me a bit claustrophobic but by mid afternoon I was getting uncomfortably warm. Now, a few days later, the A/C is off and its pretty cool. The rainstorm forecast missed us except for a little light rain which was just perfect for watering the garden and perking up the flowers.
I bought a new, larger hummingbird feeder which has 8 little holes for bird beaks. It also has a ring around the feeding spots so the little guys can sit while they drink. It’s quite a sight when there are eight tiny bodies spaced around the container, little tails quivering, feet clenched on the plastic ring. These must be the fattest hummingbirds in southeastern Louisiana! They empty my feeder completely in one day!
It was good to see Grover with the Food for Senior boxes. It seems like a long time since the last distribution. He says coming over here is restful compared to his usual work, but I know it’s tiring to drive all that way.
I received a recall notice for my 2008 Toyota Corolla. When I called to make an appointment, I was told the dealer did not have the necessary parts yet for that airbag inflator gadget yet, but they would call me when it was available. I’m sure they will do that but wonder if all recall notices are sent out before the dealers have time to get the equipment. I guess it would have to be that way! I’ve been driving this car for eight years and nothing has exploded yet. (I am running short of decals to cover the dings on my back bumper.)
Fishermen are getting 75 cents a pound for crawfish right now and I’ve been told by some people that there is no limit any longer and by another that there is a limit, so I’m assuming it depends on to whom you’re selling your crawfish. One friend told me she picked crawfish for some relative because he could not sell what he caught live. They planned to sell the picked meat.
