Biologist says Spanish Lake should be lowered to improve fishing

Lake is located between St. Martin and Iberia parishes

New Iberia – Jody David, state Department of Wildlife and Fisheries biologist, presented an updated plan to restore game fishing to Spanish Lake at the Spanish Lake Game and Fishing Preserve Commission meeting Nov. 21.

David’s proposal included a draw-down to remove undesirable species and a subsequent restocking of game fish.

He said that after much study, this process is seen as the most feasible and efficient to reestablish Spanish Lake as a viable recreational fishing lake.

David further indicated that the work may be begun in mid-February.

In public discussion following David’s presentation, the emphasis was on the need to re-establish the lake.

Commission member Greta Green moved that the Spanish Lake Commission endorse the Louisiana Wildlife and Fisher revised management plan. The motion was seconded by Prudence Catsulis and it carried unanimously.

David said he will contact officials from the Iberia and St. Martin parish governments to present and request approval of the management plan.

A motion to review the custodial agreement for the lake was tabled until further information can be obtained. This was the second time that issue was tabled.
