Lena Calais Cormier
Cecilia – A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 11 a..m on Monday, September 14, 2015, at St. Joseph Catholic Church for Lena Calais Cormier, 98, who passed away peacefully on Friday, September 11, 2015, at St. Martin Hospital in Breaux Bridge.
Visiting hours were observed from 3:30 p.m. until 9 p.m. on Sunday, and continue on Monday at 7 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. at Pellerin Funeral Home in Cecilia. A rosary was prayed at 7 p.m. on Sunday.
Fr. Joseph Campion officiated at the Funeral Mass and Deacon Ken Soignier concelebrated. Scriptures were read by Kayla Blanchard and Joy Kennedy. Gift Bearers were Hallie Guidry, Shaye Guidry, Aubrey Blanchard and Jace Blanchard.
Entombment followed at St. Joseph Mausoleum in Cecilia.
Lena was one of 15 children born to the late Albert and Stella Dugas Calais of Cecilia. She was a lifelong parishioner of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Cecilia and was a member of the Ladies Altar Society. Lena worked for several years as a janitress at Cecilia High and Junior High Schools. She loved cleaning and doing for others and she especially loved cooking for her family on weekends. Lena enjoyed having visits from her family and friends and insisted on making a pot of coffee for them until the end.
Lena was an avid sports fan who kept abreast of all sports. She was a dedicated fan of Atlanta Braves Baseball and the New Orleans Saints, but Peyton Manning was “her man.”
A devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, Lena loved her family unconditionally and will be sadly missed.
She is survived by her daughter, Amelia (Millie) Cormier Guidry and husband Kenneth of Nina; two grandchildren, Kevin Guidry and wife Shaye of Cecilia, and Kayla Guidry Blanchard and husband Jordy of Arnaudville; four great-grandchildren, Hallie Guidry, Aubrey Blanchard, Jace Blanchard and Brant Blanchard; three step daughters, Luda Cormier and husband Randell of Lafayette, Carrie Salinas and husband Rafael of Newland, N.C., and Nada Mallet of Groves, Texas; her step son, Davy Cormier and wife Pam of Nina; and 20 step grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved husband, Dieu Donne (Blanc) Cormier; two step sons, Ted and Gary Cormier; three step grandsons, Keith, Kurt and Wally Cormier; nine brothers, Louis, Wade, Clay, Sidney, Allen, Wilton, Joseph, Shirley and René Calais; and five sisters, Louise Calais, Cecile Calais, Marie Guilbeau, Agnes LeBlanc and Lorraine Pontiff.
Pallbearers were Kenneth Guidry, Kevin Guidry, Jordy Blanchard, Telly Cormier, Kim Cormier and Errol LeBlanc.
Honorary pallbearers were Randell Cormier, Davy Cormier and L.J. LeBlanc.
Her family would like to extend special thanks to Dr. Ben Degatur and his staff and the staffs of St. Agnes Nursing Home and St. Martin Hospital for the compassionate care and attention given to her during her time of need.
Pellerin Funeral Home of Cecilia was in charge of arrangements.
