Cecilia – A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 1 p.m. on Monday, February 8, 2016, at St. Joseph Catholic Church for Charles Wilson Richard, 70, who passed away on Saturday, February 6, 2016, at Opelousas General Hospital.
Visiting hours were observed at the funeral home in Cecilia from 2 p.m. until 10 p.m. on Sunday and continued on Monday at 7 a.m. until time of service. A rosary was prayed at 7 p.m. on Sunday by Deacon Ken Soignier.
Rev. Brian Webre officiated at the Mass of Christian Burial. Interment followed at St. Joseph Cemetery in Cecilia.
Charles Wilson Richard was born in Leonville, La. on October 9, 1945. He was delivered at home by his Grandmother who was a mid-wife. In 1964 he met the love of his life, Marguerite Huval and they were married on September 11, 1965.
He began his career as a deck hand on the dredge boats; he then advanced himself to become one of the first licensed boatmen in Arnaudville.
Their first son, Charles William Richard, was born in 1966, their second son, Mathew Jean Richard, was born in 1968.
Life changed for this loving family in December of 1968. After surviving a car accident and becoming a paraplegic, Wilson went on to become a draftsman and drew many plans for the local lumber yards and prospective home builders. He also had hobbies that included building birdhouses and gardening. He enjoyed working on lawn mowers and even built himself two remote control mowers to cut his own grass.
He and his wife just recently celebrated 50 years of marriage. Wilson was a wonderful and loving Son, Husband, Father, Grandfather and Great-Grandfather. He will be greatly missed by all of his family and friends.
He is survived by his wife, Marguerite Huval Richard of Cecilia; his sons, Charles William Richard and wife Melissa of Youngsville, and Mathew Jean Richard and wife Brooke of Cecilia; his brothers, Paul S. Richard and wife Jeanette of Arnaudville, John Lester Richard and wife Yvonne of Cecilia, Jeffery J. Richard of Krotz Springs and Steven L. Richard and wife Sarah of Coteau Holmes; his sisters, Mary Jane Allemond of Lawtel, Vivian R. Bergeron of Lockport and Connie R. Bergeron and husband Harris of Arnaudville; his grandchildren, Candace R. Mire and husband Stefan, Brookes M. Richard and Maddie, Breonna M. Richard, Jevin M. Richard and Hali L. Richard, his great-grandchildren, Ayden M. Mire and Jaxon J. Mire; and his step grandchildren, Brandon Miller and wife Rosalyn, and Braxton Stoot.
He is preceded in death by his father, Sidney J. Richard; mother, Marie Stelly Richard; brothers, Melvin J. Richard and Joseph James “Eugene” Richard; and his brother-in-law, Bobby Allemond.
Pallbearers were Charles Richard, Mathew Richard, Jevin Richard, Brookes Richard, John Richard and Rowdy Latiolais.
Honorary pallbearer was Braxton Stoot.
Pellerin Funeral Home of Cecilia was in charge of arrangements.
