State Police’s investigation continues
Louisiana State Police continues to investigate a double shooting, which occurred Tuesday, October 14.
Trooper David Anderson, public information officer for Troop I, said investigators are still speaking to witnesses and victims. Once the investigation is complete, a report will be turned over to the district attorney’s office. District Attorney Brent Coreil previously explained the matter will be brought in front of a grand jury. The judicial process continues in this case as state police continue to gather information.
State police were contacted to investigate this incident by Sheriff Eddie Soileau, who wanted to make sure the correct procedures were followed in this incident.
According to reports, an Evangeline Parish deputy shot Fontenot after responding to a burglary in progress on Deballion Plantation Road. The deputy ordered the homeowner, Joseph Fontenot, 69, to show his hands, at which time Fontenot picked up a shotgun and turned toward the deputy. Fontenot was shot in the arm and abdominal area. He remains in critical condition.
Fontenot shot and killed 21-year-old Michael S. Fontenot, who was involved in the burglary along with three others, James Kyle Fontenot, 22-year-old David Guillory and 22-year-old Gilbert Lafleur. Guillory and LaFleur were charged with principle to attempted aggravated burglary. James Kyle Fontenot was charged with attempted aggravated burglary.
The Evangeline Parish Sheriff’s Office recently reported the deputy was cleared to return to work, and the homeowner would not be charged. Following a consultation with Coreil’s office, charges were filed against the suspects in this case, who are believed to have been involved in a previous home invasion of Fontenot’s residence. The first invasion is currently under investigation by the Evangeline Parish Sheriff’s Office.
