Big Disc Golf meet at Magnolia on March 4
Geaux Throw is hosting another exciting Disc Golf tournament at the Magnolia Park course. The second annual Magnolia Open will be held on Saturday, March 4 and will be the first one sanctioned by the Professional Disc Golf Association (PDGA).
As many as 90 players will compete on the course, which was built in 2016. Several professional and well-known area amateur players are expected, including world distance record holder David Wiggins Jr., who has thrown a disc an amazing 1,108.92 feet.
Also expected to attend is Amateur Advanced Sr. Grandmaster World Champ Nick Repair, 17 year-old Lafayette phenom Thunder Schultz, and professional players Nicholas Robichaus and Josh Patin.
Geaux Throw was formed in 2015 and, along with City Councilman Mike Fuselier and businessman Blake Douet, successfully promoted the construction of the well-regarded course in Magnolia Park.
The course was built at minimal expense to the city, thanks to local business sponsorship and Geaux Throw’s donation of all the goal baskets. The course brings hundreds of new visitors to the park and has brought increased business to local establishments, especially on busy tournament days..
Tyler M. Sonnier of Geaux Throw said Saturday’s tournament is an important PDGA-sanctioned B-tier event and is “monumental for future events of this stature to be held in our area.” It will bring attention to the Magnolia course and promote this fast-growing nationwide sport in St. Martinville and the surrounding area. Sonnier hopes Magnolia Park will continue to host the event on an annual basis.
Players can sign up on the day of the event from 7-9:30 a.m. A player’s meeting will be held at 9:45 and tee-off will be at 10 a.m.
