Ethel Jeter
Long time St. Martinville resident Ethel Jeter, 87, passed away in Columbia, Missouri on Sept. 21, 2016, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease.
Ethel, a teacher for most of her life, and her husband, John, moved to St. Martinville in 1980. She began teaching at the old St. Martin Academy on Port Street. When it closed, Ethel, John and a group of parents built the St. Martin Prep School. It opened in 1984 and operated until 1996.
The main concern of her life was to start children off with an appreciation of the value of learning and a knowledge of he responsibilities of adult life. But she never let them forget that life should be fun, too. She was creative and busy person who engaged in many civic activities and was an active member of the St. Martinville Garden Club.
Ethel was much loved by her students, friends and family. She was preceded in death by her husband, John. She is survived by two sons, Mark and Karl. Mark lives in Columbia, Missouri. He and his wife, Emily Shepard, have two daughters, Erin and Chelsea. Karl is a resident of St. Martinville.
