Navasota, Texas – Joseph R. Guidry, 74, of Navasota, formerly of College Station, died Saturday, March 12, 2016, at Scott & White Memorial Hospital in Temple, surrounded by his loving family.
Calling hours were held from 12 to 4 p.m. Tuesday, March 15, 2016, at Lindley-Robertson-Holt Funeral Home of Navasota with a gathering of family and friends that took place from 5 to 7 p.m. at Christ Our Light Catholic Church, 9677 Hwy 6 in Navasota. A vigil service with Deacon Grant Holt at the presider and Knights of Columbus rosary concluded the evening at 7 p.m.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 16, 2016, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 507 E. 26th St. in Bryan with Msgr. Joseph A. McCaffrey as the celebrant. The rite of committal will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
Serving as pallbearers will be Cody Scott, James Roberts, Marcus Noto, Douglas Noto, Drew Stackhouse and David Hovorak. Honorary pallbearers are Mike Divin, Charles Kuder, Kent Dunlap, Randy Dugas and Lance Guidry.
Joe was born January 28, 1942, in Breaux Bridge, Louisiana to Rosen and Aline Danos Guidry. At the age of 12 his family moved to College Station where Joe played the trumpet and baritone in the A&M Consolidated band and graduated in 1960. It was on November 23, 1963, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church that he married Shirley Marie Dominik.
An original member of the College Station Volunteer Fire Department, Joe worked for 25 years for the City of College Station in the electrical department. He installed and maintained the signal lights. It wasn’t unusual to find control boxes on the dining room table with Joe burning the midnight oil attempting to fix them by morning. For 18 years Joe worked at Mid-South Snyergy in Navasota as a construction supervisor, safety coordinator and fleet manager, retiring in 2003.
Joe believed in giving back to his community as well as serving others – as a member of the College Station VFD, coaching little league in College Station and a longtime member of the Knights of Columbus. As a member of Christ Our Light Catholic Church, he served for numerous years as a minister of hospitality.
An avid story teller, rather true or false, and always with a “Cajun flare,” Joe never met a stranger. He enjoyed hunting, woodworking, riding his motorcycle and making trips to the casinos in Louisiana and Oklahoma. He was most proud of his Cajun heritage and loved to eat crawfish in his homeland of Breaux Bridge, listening to Cajun music and attending the Crawfish Festival in Breaux Bridge. For 25 years, until his health forced him to stop, Joe was an avid league bowler. It was always a treat to be around the house when Joe was cooking up a pot of gumbo or other Cajun flame – if you went away hungry, you had no one to blame but yourself! Joe was also a staunch supporter and fan of the Texas A&M Aggies.
His son Michael introduced Joe to a lovely lady, the second love of his life, Sylvia Hart Scott, and on August 28, 2011, they married at Christ Our Light Catholic Church. With Sylvia’s love and care, it was her saving grace and love that kept Joe going on more than one occasion.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents and step-father, Rosen Guidry and Aline and Morris Thibodeaux; his first wife Shirley; a brother Kenneth; and granddaughter, Stephanie Dawn Guidry.
Survivors include his wife, Sylvia Guidry of Navasota; sons, Steven Guidry and wife Marjorie of Doyletown, Penn., and Michael Guidry and wife Audrey of College Station; a daughter, Denise Stackhouse and husband Drew, of Normangee; step-sons, Paul Scott and wife Dee Dee of Justin, Texas, and Clint Scott and wife Carol Ann of Rowlett, Texas; grandchildren, Randall Austin Guidry, Alyssa and Jacob Guidry, Camden, Patrick and Joseph Stackhouse and Dusty, Cody, Cassidy and Carson Scott; a brother, Wayne Guidry and wife Barbara of College Station; along with numerous other relatives and a great number of friends.
