School Board upgrading cable to campuses
During a brief meeting last week the St. Martin School Board approved the expenditure of $2,314,772 in 2013 bond proceeds for cabling upgrades at 10 parish schools and eight new classrooms at Cecilia Jr. High.
The cabling work, necessary to upgrade schools to accommodate the growing use of computers in schools, will be performed at Cecilia High and Jr. High, Breaux Bridge Primary and BB High, St. Martinville High, Cecilia Primary and Teche Elementary, Catahoula Elementary, Parks Middle and Stephensville Elementary by either Prevost Electric Inc., Com-Net Services LLC or Global Data Systems Inc. at a total cost of $1,183,772.
Southern Construction LLC of New Iberia was the low bidder among 11 bids received at $1,131,000 for the eight new classrooms at CJH.
The project architects, Angelle Architects, pointed out that the low bid was 8 percent over budget but “We are working with the low bidder to look at options to see how we can cut some of the costs to get closer to the budget. With that said, we would point out that with the 11 bids received, we do think this seems to be a fair number for the project at this point in time.”
In another bond related matter, the board approved the purchase of two lots, measuring a total of approximately 120 by 120 feet, near Cecilia High School at a cost of $30,000.
