St. Martin Hospital’s Gumbo Cook Off is Saturday, Oct. 11

St. Martin Hospital, in partnership with United Way of Acadiana, will host the 4th annual St. Martin Hospital Gumbo Cook Off on the hospital grounds Saturday, Oct. 11.
Local teams will compete for the title of 2014 St. Martin Hospital Gumbo Cook-Off Champion and the event raises money for United Way of Acadiana.
While in its fourth year, this is only the second year the event has been open to the public.
Limited booth space is available on a first-come, first-served basis.
The entry fee per team is $20 and the deadline to register is Friday, Sept. 26.
Teams must have four members including a designated team captain who will be responsible for communicating the rules to the other members, among which are no alcoholic beverages and no smoking.
Teams may begin cooking at 6 a.m. and entries must be at the judges’ table by 11:30 a.m.
The presentation of awards will be at 1 p.m.
Each team will be assigned a specific area to set up their cooking area. Teams are encouraged to provide a canopy or tent for their temporary kitchens. Participants are responsible for their equipment, including burners, propane tanks, canopies, tables and chairs and decorations.
St. Martin Hospital and its Cook Off sponsors will provide most of the ingredients including the team’s choice of chicken thighs, sausage, shrimp, tasso, onions, bell peppers, cooked rice and roux (teams may use their own roux) as well as water, bowls, spoons and napkins.
Teams may add other ingredients but will have to bear the cost themselves.
All cooking must be done on propane burners. Electricity will not be available for cooking.
Teams are required to cook a minimum of three gallons of gumbo.
