Bonjour!
So you enjoy a long-ago habit of reading when you go to bed. Good for you. Your lagniappe reward for what seems like your unending day’s chores. Good relaxing time like the commercial would say “Calgon, take me away.” When after day is done, you’ve turned TV off after the news, your house becomes silent when everyone else has gone to bed. Ah, at last you are now relaxed in the comfort of your bedroom and ready and anxious to read about what will be in the next chapter from last night. At last your time is yours. You’d been thinking about those last pages and anxious to read on to the next ones.
After you’ve read a while, your eyes get heavy and so you put down the book to fall into what’s left of your welcome restful night. You toss and turn a bit, making yourself comfortable, fluff up your pillow and voila, ready, set, fall asleep. Calgon done took you away.
But wait! Your eyes open! On the little table where you laid your book... Looking up realizing you are not alone!
A creepy experience told to me par ma cousine: There next to the book on the table by her bed was a snake about two and a half feet long looking at her. Scared, thought oh my God what was she going to do? She keeps a small light next to her bed. She jokingly said she did not look to see if it had teeth. Slowly she began backing up on all fours across the bed moving away from the little booger. And then to get away from her, it slipped from the table and began crawling up the wall. But Cousine said she remained calm and cool. With her car keys in hand she picked up from the table, she walked out that room and closed the door behind her making sure it had not tagged along at her feet. She escaped to the kitchen/living room/den area with her pillow where she knew she’d be safe from the enemy.
Time must have been around 1 a.m. She did not feel sleepy anymore imagining that slimy crawler crawling around looking for a hole to squeeze in. How long had it been in her house and how many times did it cross her bed? But she felt safe because she knew the snake was in her bedroom when she had shut the door closed. She did not think to bring her book with her when she escaped. And definitely did not want to waken the family. The house would have been in an uproar. She’d thought of calling 911 but decided against it.
Well, about an hour later she heard sounds of ruffling papers coming from the kitchen. She did not go in there right away to inspect. She keeps her bills in a small bin on a shelf there in the kitchen for mailing next day. The noise did not stop. She got up to check it out.
Oh no! How did the snake make its way to the kitchen? Upon seeing her it fell to the floor with a thump then disappeared. How did it get there? Or were there two? If not, it had crawled by past her feet as she sat in darkness in the den. So what she did was turn the carport light on left the door open with the kitchen in total darkness. She’d heard snakes do like light so she took a chance her “little buddy” might leave.
And apparently it did – or did they? Great gutsy grandma story to share with her grand kids! Fearful as she still is, she did not panic.
Going visit my son this week! Amètie à tout!
