A.J. Croce in concert at the Old New Orleans Mint
Great artists have a style about them. When they take the stage the whole room focuses on the artist. A.J. Croce entered the room for his performance recently at the Old New Orleans Mint and all eyes focused on him. He and his piano, and his one other member of his band gave all in attendance a memorable performance.
Croce, son of legendary singer/songwriter Jim Croce, started his career at around 18 years of age. Back then, he opened up for B.B. King among others. Now, some 20 plus years later, it seems that he has gained momentum. He performed many songs from his latest album, 12 Tales. The record, his most ambitious recording to date, was produced by six of the top producers to be found.
One of those producers, Allen Toussaint, was in the house for last night’s performance. He even sat side-by-side with Croce at the piano and performed a piano piece with him.
Croce delivered song after song from the new album. By the way, if you haven’t listened to this man’s music, you are missing out! He was energetic and warm. He stopped between songs and told interesting stories about the songs and the legendary producers that helped form the style of each song. I felt like I was visiting with an old friend. His connection with his friends was notable.
There were many highlights from the show. His cover of “Maybe I’m Amazed,” by Paul McCartney was just stunning. The man is a master at the piano.
He also gave us a little background on his dad’s song, “Operator.” He said it was written back in 1964 when phone booths, with doors were the common thing. And then he performed the song, and it was almost as if Jim Croce was back with us singing that legendary song.
A.J. Croce loves what he does. He loves the music. He loves the fans. I could tell that he was definitely comfortable in his own skin.
After the show, he met and visited with the fans, or should I say friends who came out to visit with him. I loved the show. The Old New Orleans Mint is a comfortable and warm venue to see a live show. The whole experience was absolutely wonderful!
