Antoine Chataignier

Coteau Holmes – Funeral services were conducted for Mr. Antoine Chataignier, 90, at 2 p.m. Friday April 15, 2011, at St. Elizabeth’s Catholic Church with Fr. Joe officiating. Interment was at St. Elizabeth Cemetery.

A native and resident of St. Martinville, Mr. Chataignier passed away at 3:40 am on Wednesday April 13, 2011 at Iberia Medical Center.

Known by all as the Mayor of Bayou Portage, Antoine was a retired heavy equipment operator having worked for the St. Martin Parish Police Jury. After his retirement, he enjoyed spending time sitting on his swing and visiting with friends. He will be dearly missed.

He is survived by his daughter, Elaine Cormier of St. Martinville; grandchildren, Elizabeth Levens of Breaux Bridge, Donna Naumann of Carencro and John Cormier Jr.; great-grandchildren, Jarred, Jene, Savannah and Madison; and sister, Lorraine Trahan of Coteau Holmes.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Donna Poirier Chataignier, parents, Willie and Amante Barras Chataignier; brother, Perry Chataignier; sisters, Inez Boudreaux, Anna LeBlanc, Therese Dugas, Laura Molbert, Elmire Savoy, Yola Lasseigne and Mathilde Bertrand; and son-in-law, John Cormier Sr.

The family would like to give special thanks to his friend, Sheila Vice, for her care and to the staff of Iberia Medical Center, Dr. Gullota, Dr. Harrington, and Heart of Hospice for their compassionate care of Mr. Antoine.
