Matthew Lambert, business development officer with the La. Dept. of Economic Development Entrepreneurial Services will explain community outreach services of the department Thursday at 5:30 p.m. in the Eunice City Council meeting room.

All small business owners or people thinking about starting a small business are urged to attend.

‘Ballyhoo’ tickets

still available

Individual tickets are available for purchase for the first show of the Eunice Players’ Theatre’s 39th season, “The Last Night of Ballyhoo” written by Alfred Uhry. This two-act comedy/drama is directed by Gabe Ortego and Angie B. LaCalle.

The production continues nightly at 7 p.m. through through Saturday with the final performance Sunday at 2 p.m.

Individual tickets are $10 and season tickets are still available.

The Eunice Fireman Association’s annual barbeque will be Sunday at Station 3 on Sittig Road.

Chicken or pork with traditional trimmings will be $7.

Tourney will benefit

cancer patient

A co-ed softball tournament to benefit cancer patient Kenneth Bertrand will be Friday-Sunday at the girls field across from Champagne’s on Maple Avenue.

Entry fee is $100 per team. T-shirts will awarded 1st and 2nd place and there will be a beer drinking award.

Two birdwatching

events at Arboretum

Children are invited to learn about birds on Saturday from 10 to 11 a.m., at the Louisiana State Arboretum in Ville Platte.

This program will introduce children to birdwatching. They will learn about binocular use, how to use a field guide and take a short walk to look for birds in the Arboretum. Children will also have a chance to make a bird-related craft to take home with them.

“Children’s Hour is devoted to educating our youth about our natural environment and history through first-hand experiences,” said Kim Hollier, site naturalist.

Poetry Month

Throughout April, the LeDoux Library at LSUE will host poetry events to celebrate National Poetry Month.

Included will be the National Poetry Writing Month challenge, with flexible monthly goals ranging from 5, 10, 15, 20, or the “a poem a day challenge” of 30.

There will be two writing sessions a week - Wednesday lunchtimes from 12-1 p.m. and Friday nights from 5:30-7:30 p.m.

sets hamburger sale

Eunice Elementary’s annual barbeque hamburger sale will be Thursday, April 24. $2 tickets will be on sale beginning Monday, March 31.

Pick up of orders will be in back of the school from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Junior Ranger

Day set for April 26

Junior Ranger Day will be celebrated at the Prairie Acadian Cultural Center on Saturday, April 26, from 8 a.m. until 5:30 p.m.

Activities will include a scavenger hunt and a treasure chest.

InPulse appearing

at LSUE April 25

The LSUE Performing Series is presenting the all male a capella band, InPulse on Friday, April 25, at the Liberty Theater.

The show is at 7 p.m. and tickets are $5 and will be available in advance or at the door.

“Dinner and a Show” tickets are $20 and must be purchased in advance. Dinner is being served at Ruby’s Banquet Room on Second Street (Cajun stuffed pork with all the fixins).

Cajun Music Hall

to open its addition

The Cajun Music Hall of Fame and Museum will have the grand opening of its new addition on Saturday, April 26, from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m.

Refreshments will follow a brief opening ceremony.

The addition includes mannequins of Joe Falcon, Cleoma Breaux and Lionel LeLeux.

The museum is at 240 South C.C. Duson.

Kindergarten registration for Eunice public schools will be April 28 through May 1.

Parents will need to have child’s original birth certificate, updated shots record, social security card, mother’s social security number, head of household’s social security number and proof of residence.

Glendale, Tuesday, April 29;

East, Wednesday, April 30;

Eunice Elementary sets Pre-K signup

Eunice Elementary will be signing up Pre-K students for the 2008-2009 school year April 28-May 9.

Your child must be 4 years old on or before September 30, 2008 and you must have a copy of the following items in order to sign-up your child for Pre-K: birth certificate, social security card, proof of residency (current utility bill), immunization card, and head of household’s social security number.

Sign up is from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Glendale Elementary is holding 2008-09 pre-K Title I registration in the school office through April 30.

To qualify, children must reside in Glendale’s attendance zone and must be four by Sept. 30.

group forming

The Acadiana Open Source Group, a new user group intent on creating a local community centered around open source technologies, will have its first meeting on Tuesday, April 29.

The meeting will be from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. It will be held in the upstairs conference room of the Acadiana Symphony Orchestra Conservatory of Music at 412 Travis in the Lafayette Oil Center.

Fun Fest set

at Rec complex

The Eunice Recreation Complex will be hosting the first annual Recreational Fun Fest on Saturday, May 3, with fun jumps, water slides, bands, home run hitters, hay rides, Guitar Hero competition and more.

Entrance fee is $5 and most events are pay-to-play. All proceeds will go towards the goal of installing an in-ground sprinkler system at the park.

Law Day rites

This year’s Law Day will be on May 1 at the St. Landry Parish Courthouse in Judge Ellis Daigle’s courtroom on the second floor.

Festivities will begin at 10 a.m. and the public is invited.

The observance of the National Day of Prayer will be at Eunice City Hall at noon on Thursday, May 1, under the auspices of the Greater Eunice Ministerial Alliance

The special day was declared more than 50 years ago by President Harry S Truman as a day when citizens of all faiths could pray together in their own way for the nation and its leaders.

Vets’ appreciation

Benefit crawfish boil planned for May 4

There will be a Benefit Crawfish boil for Veronica Frey David, daughter of Gene and Delores Frey, to help with cancer medical expenses.

The benefit will be held at the Northwest Community Center on Sunday, May 4, from 11 a.m. until. Music will be provided by Jason Frey. There will be a live auction and a cake sale.

Cystic Fibrosis

The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation will host its annual walk, GREAT STRIDES, on Saturday, May 3, in Lafayette. Registration will begin at 9:30 a.m. at Girard Park’s Main Pavilion and the walk will start at 10 a.m.

School Board sets

driver’s ed classes

The St. Landry Parish School Board’s Driver’s Education summer program will begin on Wednesday, May 28. Classes will be held from 8 a.m. until noon.

Registration for the program will be Tuesday, May 27, from 8 a.m. until noon at Eunice High.

The program consists of 30 hours of class work (about one and a half weeks) and six hours of driving.

Cost is $250, which must be paid at registration by cash or check.

The program is open to public, private and parochial school students who are age 15 by July 15 of this year. Proof of age is also required at registration.

The St. Landry Parish Government Animal Control Facility is now open Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. until 1 p.m.

Patricia Guillory, Animal Control Supervisor says “more animals are being picked up due to the change of season from winter to spring and adoptions of the animals are a priority, so the parish wants to give everyone a chance to see what great animals we have available.”

to assist deputy

The City Marshal’s Office is accepting donations to help St. Landry Deputy Spencer Gallow who was injured while escorting a funeral procession.

Canisters will be placed around the city or donations can be taken to the Marshal’s Office on the second floor of City Hall.

Fund created

for fire victims

A fund has been created for the family of Kim and Diana Gaspard Castille, which includes three children who lost all their belongings, including the family vehicle, in a house fire.

The fire occurred on Feb. 23.

The fund is at Hancock Bank and is called the Castille Family Benefit Fund.
