St. Agnes staffer cited for patient’s outcome

Breaux Bridge – Sue Cormier, assistant director of nursing at St. Agnes Healthcare and Rehab, was recognized for special achievement during a Dementia Workshop, according to an article in The Leader, a Louisiana Newsletter for Assisted Living Facilities and Long Term Care Nursing Homes.
The article related how Cormier was able to wean a patient off a heavy dose of antipsychotic medication and return the woman to her family.
The patient was admitted to St. Agnes in what was described as “a somewhat catatonic state,” unable to sit up or walk and was non-responsive.
Over a four month period, under Cormier’s supervision, the woman was slowly weaned off the medications and underwent physical therapy. She eventually began to communicate with staff, and was able to start walking on her own.
One year after admission to St. Agnes she was taken off the last of her medication and was not exhibiting any behavioral problems. She was discharged and was able to move to a son’s home.
“We are so proud of our assistant director of nursing, Sue Cormier, RN,” says St. Agnes Administrator Ricky Hayes. “Her dedication to her profession and to St. Agnes Healthcare is to be admired and commended, and we are so fortunate to have her as part of our team.”
