Skatepark possible for Magnolia Park

A new feature is being considered for installation at Magnolia Park.
The “skatepark” would be located in the open area between the community center and walking track. A second feature of the installation would occupy a portion of the south end of the park pavilion.
Proposed at the Aug. 7 city council meeting by council member Mike Fuselier, the concrete skatepark would cost around $50,000 and would be financed using part of the $950,000 for recreation improvements the city has received from the bond issue approved by voters last December.
Similar skateparks have been added at many parks and recreation centers across the country. Lafayette skating promoter Luke Romero told the council nearby installations in Lafayette and Abbeville have proven to be extremely popular.
Designer and contractor David Wattigny said modern concrete skateparks can be used by skaters, skateboarders and bicyclists, last forever and are basically maintenance-free.
Wattigny, a New Iberia native, has built parks all over the country. He said liability issues have all but been eliminated by proper design. One he built three years ago in Abbeville has produced no reported injuries, he added. Construction takes five to seven weeks.
Responding to a question from an audience member about the status of improvements at Adam Carlson Park, Mayor Thomas Nelson said that a majority of the remaining bond funds will be spent there. The bidding process is underway for construction of a recreation center building, restrooms, walkways and a concession stand.
An additional football practice field is being prepared by city employees now as weather permits, and should be ready by football season, Nelson said.
