Residential construction opens strong for 2017

Residential construction activity opened the new year on a positive note, according to building permits issued by Parish Government and the City of Breaux Bridge.
The number of new homes started in unincorporated areas of the parish totaled 27 with a value of $5,617,000 for the months of January and February. There were 45 purchased homes valued at $6.7 million.
The total value of all residential permits increased from $12.2 million in November and December to $14.3 million during the past two months.
But the sluggish commercial market continued in the doldrums, with Parish Government issuing just three permits with a total value of less than $700,000, down from $1.3 million during November-December. And that included a Parish Government project of building a “safe room” at the Sheriff’s Office complex on Main Hwy between Parks and Ruth valued at $338,000.
Breaux Bridge saw a healthy jump in both residential and commercial activity during the first two months of 2017.
Permits were issued for seven new homes compared to just one during the last two months of 2016 and commercial permits jumped from one to five.
Leading the list of commercial development is a new building for The Cart Store on Latiolais Road, valued at $248,000.
The breakdown of permits issued by Parish Government in rural areas and by the municipalities of Breaux Bridge and St. Martinville during January and February 2017 are listed below.
