An Alexandria contractor has begun work on a $946,000 project that will replace Main Street sidewalks in downtown St. Martinville.
J.D Rebar & Construction Co. was awarded the contract for the work which is being funded mostly through federal and state grants.
Mayor Thomas Nelson said Monday that the city’s share of the cost will be only $47,000 while the state will put up $57,000. The remainder will be covered by a federal grant.
Sidewalks on both sides of Main Street from Claiborne to Madison Streets will be replaced as well as the sidewalks on the north side of Bridge Street from Main to the Bayou Teche bridge. Also included in the project are new sidewalks on both sides of New Market Street from Bridge to Evangeline Boulevard and the sidewalks along the boulevard.
Mayor Nelson said he is hoping the city will be able to use local funds to make some sidewalk improvements on South Main Street and along some blocks in Pinaudville on the east side of the bayou.
