Overall school performance up

District and School Performance Scores (DPS and SPS) for 2016-17 released earlier this month by the state Department of Education show general improvements for St. Martin Parish schools.
Superintendent Dr. Lottie P. Beebe and Phyllis Landry, parish supervisor of elementary education, presented a detailed report on the extensive testing results to local school board members last week.
The parish’s DPS held steady at “B” although there was a slight decline in the numerical score, from 89.3 to 88.5.
Results show that Parks Primary remained the parish’s only “A” school while nine schools – Cecilia Primary, Teche Elementary, Parks Middle, Cecilia High, Breaux Bridge High, Early Learning Center, St. Martinville Primary and Breaux Bridge Jr. High – all raised the letter grades.
But five local schools – Breaux Bridge Primary and Elementary, Cecilia Jr. High, St. Martinville Sr. High and Stephensville – suffered a drop in letter grades.
The number of “B” schools in the parish increased from four to five, and the number of “C” schools from six to eight.
Last year five parish schools graded “D” but 2016-17 results show only two – Breaux Bridge Primary and Elementary – at that level.
Parish high schools showed improvement in strength of diplomas, ACT scores, end of course assessments, graduation rates and dropouts.
Dr. Beebe commended students, teachers, administrative, support and supervisory staff for their work in maintaining the district’s “B” letter grade while acknowledging that “We will face even greater challenges within the 2018 testing and accountability program.”
