’Dogs knock off Breaux Bridge

Breaux Bridge – Cecilia used three big second half plays to break open a close game on the way to a 31-7 victory over parish rival Breaux Bridge here last Friday.
With the Bulldogs holding a slim 10-7 lead at intermission, Kaleb Carter returned a BB punt 52 yards for a touchdown midway through the third period, Kerrick Alexander turned an interception into an 87-yard score minutes later, and workhorse fullback Devin Briscoe sealed the victory by breaking loose for a 70-yard TD run in the final minute of play.
Briscoe, who has keyed Cecilia’s running game after missing the first half of the season with a sore knee, finished the night with 127 yards and two touchdowns on 18 carries.
The loss was Breaux Bridge’s first in District 5-4A play while Cecilia improved to 3-0 to sit atop the league race with one game remaining.
Breaux Bridge took an early 7-0 lead, going 57 yards in six plays on its first possession. Freshman Dartravian Girod raced 47 yards with a Julian Leon pass for the score barely three minutes into the game.
Cecilia struck back two minutes later after Corey Williams connected with Kaleb Carter for 33 yards to spark the drive. Briscoe punched it in from the one and Olivier’s PAT kick tied the game at 7-all.
Cecilia threatened early in the second period, driving inside the BB 10 before bogging down. But Olivier’s field goal attempt from 26 yards out drifted to the left.
The Bulldog defense forced a BB punt and Cecilia got the ball back at the Tiger 47. The Breaux Bridge defense kept the Bulldogs out of the end zone but Olivier drilled his second field goal attempt, this one from 36 yards, as time expired and Cecilia enjoyed a slim 10-7 halftime advantage.
Carter’s punt return and Alexander’s pick-six boosted Cecilia’s lead to 24-7 in the third quarter and Briscoe’s stunning 70-yard TD run in the final minute of play closed out the game.
Cecilia senior quarterback Corey Williams didn’t throw any TD passes, but he did complete 12-of-19 attempts for 139 yards without an interception.
Kaleb Carter and Daniel Angelle each had four receptions, with Carter accounting for 69 yards and Angelle 28.
Logan Bossier led the Breaux Bridge ground attack, which was limited to 113 yards by a stout Cecilia defense. Bossier carried 11 times for 75 yards.
Junior quarterback Julian Leon struggled a bit, connecting on only nine of 31 attempts with two picks. He finished with 101 yards, including BB’s only touchdown, the 47-yard completion to Girod.
Breaux Bridge, which has an open date this Friday, wrapped up regular season play at 4-5, 3-1. Cecilia (6-3, 3-0) hosts St. Martinville (5-4, 2-1) in the regular season finale Friday and the Bulldogs can secure the 5-4A championship with a win over the rival Tigers.
