Workers at the Louisiana Sugarcane Cooperative mill at St. John spent the holidays rushing to wrap up the 2013 grinding season after a mid-December freeze killed much of the cane still in the fields.
But Mike Comb, general manager at LaSuCa, says the frigid weather proved to be a relatively minor setback, lowering sugar recovery a bit.
Grinding is expected to end on Jan. 8 and Comb projects the crop to yield more than 253 million pounds of sugar from 1,180,000 tons of cane processed.
